Beware of the Easter Bunny Cake

With Easter coming up on April 24, stores are full of creative seasonal cakes. This little bunny cake looks cute and costs less than $10, but there is an ugly secret hiding beneath that plastic face and bowtie.

Cutting into this cake revealed a small round cake cut in half and stacked together. The top and sides are covered with more than an inch of frosting.

The eggs are malted milk ball candies. The mass of green frosting dissolved the bottom of the candy, making it soggy and inedible.

DIY Easter Bunny Cake
Skip this grocery store cake and make one at home. Betty Crocker has an easy recipe for a bunny cake. It calls for coconut to add a furry effect, but a grass tip also adds a fuzzy look.

Pillsbury's Happy Bunny Cake is a classic option and the recipe is sometimes printed on the carrot cake mix box. Simply bake two round cakes. Use one as the bunny's face and trim the other to make two ears and a bowtie. The complete recipe is available at Pillsbury.com.
