Review: Family Finest Bake-N-Make Cookie Decorating Kit

Bake-N-Make Cookie Sundae
Have you seen these Bake-N-Make Cookie Decorating Kits? For about $5, they come with everything you need to bake and decorate four jumbo cookies. Although there are no suggested ages on the box, this product seems ideal for kids ages 3 to 8. There isn’t a lot of action (measuring, stirring, etc.) for older kids or those who are accustomed to having more “jobs” in the kitchen. The tradeoff means the adults can simply pop the raw cookies into the oven without worrying about following a recipe or washing a bunch of dishes.

Bake-N-Make Cookie Kit
The best thing about this kit is that it comes with all the necessary ingredients and disposable baking trays. It includes four packets of pastel frosting, one bag of rainbow sprinkles, and four trays loaded with cookie dough. The frosting packets and cookies are individually wrapped so you can use exactly what you need.

The package contains two sugar cookies and two chocolate chip cookies. Each tray contains a thick puck of cookie dough. After unwrapping, the disposable baking trays go on a baking sheet for support and into a pre-heated oven set to 350°F.

Baking Test
It took about 15 to 18 minutes for the cookies to bake. I did run into a slight problem because some of the trays were bowed out a bit and the cookies followed suit as they baked.

I let the cookies cool completely to ensure the frosting would not melt during the decorating process. It was very convenient to set everything out and let the kids work with their own supplies. Each of the frosting packets was ample enough to add fun designs or a thin coating to one cookie. The packaging made it easy for the kids to work independently while also keeping the mess to a minimum.

The jumbo cookies, they’re about 7 inches across, were big enough to cut into pizza-style slice. The cookies tasted a lot like the typical slice-and-bake cookies, but they had the distinctive texture of a cookie cake—slightly crisp around the edges. The decorative frosting added a hint of sweetness without overwhelming the cookies.

Cookie Kit Hacks
This kit focuses on the decorating aspect (Make) moreso than the preparation and cooking (Bake) process. Still, it is a good go-to activity for all ages.

Party Craft and Favor
Bake the cookies ahead of time. Portion sprinkles into ramekins or small dishes. Use scissors to snip the corner off the frosting packets--this will make it easier to pipe designs. Give each kid a cookie, frosting packet, spoon, and sprinkles to create a custom dessert. The lip on the disposable trays makes it easy to securely cover the decorated cookies with foil and send them home.

Jumbo Cookie Sundae
Top a baked cookie with four small scoops of ice cream. Drizzle with frosting and top with sprinkles. For a more traditional skillet cookie sundae, top the ice cream with whipped cream, hot fudge, and a maraschino cherry.

Edible Greeting Card
Decorate the baked cookie with a basic message such as "Happy B-Day". Tightly cover the baking tray with a piece of plastic wrap and secure it to the underside with tape.

Where to Buy Family Finest Bake-N-Make Cookies
The kit comes in a light blue rectangular box. I found it nestled on a low shelf near tubes of cookie dough and canned cinnamon rolls in the refrigerated case at Wal-Mart. (It was next to a slot for Family Finest Make-N-Bake Pizza, $5.50, but those were out of stock.)

Disclosure: I received a free product for review.
